Hi Friends!

Many of you have asked about Care Packages! First, THANK YOU! If you’re thinking about sending us a package, want to send us a package, or just have a unique interest in the postal system, this post is for you. Here, we’ll cover the following:

  1. WHERE TO SEND A CARE PACKAGE

  2. HOW TO SEND A CARE PACKAGE

  3. WHAT TO SEND IN A CARE PACKAGE

  4. WHAT NOT TO SEND IN A CARE PACKAGE

WHERE TO SEND A CARE PACKAGE

Things change on the PCT constantly. Timelines and plans go out the window in an instant. With all of the snow in the Sierra this year, we are no longer going Northbound. We’ve completed the Desert section, and are heading up to the Oregon/Washington border to hike Southbound. With that being said, here are TWO new options for sending care packages.

[[NOTE: WE ONLY NEED ONE PACKAGE PER LOCATION! Once a location has been taken, we will remove it from the site.]]

HOW TO SEND A CARE PACKAGE

  1. We recommend sending USPS Flat Rate, as it’s the easiest option.

  2. Clearly write my name (Sarah Herman) on ALL SIX SIDES OF THE BOX. Write this as big as you can!

  3. Clearly mark a return address on the box.

  4. Have fun! Decorate the box. Put bright colored tape on it, draw pictures, write notes, etc. - Make it stand out from the crowd!

  5. Comment on this post to let us know to expect a package, and where. If we do not receive a comment, we will not know to pick up your package!

WHAT TO SEND IN A CARE PACKAGE

I’ll keep this short and sweet. The answer is FOOD. Since we’re over 700 miles into the hike now, we know what we like and what we’re sick of. Below are lists we’ve developed to help you fill your box with things we’ll love:

JESS’S LIST:

Food

SARAH’S LIST:

Food

WHAT NOT TO SEND IN A CARE PACKAGE

“But guys, food is boring! I want to send you something else. There has to be other things you need out there…right?”

I’m terribly sorry to crush your outside the box energy (pun - always intended), but we’d most appreciate if you stick to sending us food in a care package. But I’ll humor you, and provide a short list of things not to send in a care package:

  • Meat Products (Jerky)

  • A Puppy

  • A Deck of Cards

  • Shampoo, Conditioner, or Soap (even the mini ones)

  • New Gear

Again, this list is not comprehensive, but essentially anything that we cannot eat, please refrain. If you want to send us a note of encouragement or some cold hard cash in your gift box that is filled with food, that’s awesome. Do that. But the reason why we’re sticking tight to food only are for these two reasons:

  1. WEIGHT. Anything you send us, we have to find a spot for in our bags and carry it on our backs. We’ve spent months honing in our gear lists and trimming out anything that’s not crucial. That deck of cards might be fun, but we’ve decided we don’t need one.

  2. LOGISTICS. We may need to refresh one of our pieces of gear, but we won’t know that in advance. We’ll no doubt smell horrible and need a small shampoo when we get to town, but maybe we’ll be able to get one for free in a hiker box.

Food is a constant. We will always need food, we will always consume food, and we will always love receiving food.

Feel free to drop a comment with any questions! & Once again, THANK YOU ALL for your support in every way.
